The first step is knowing what you intend to tow, as that determines the class of hitch you will need:

• Class 2 – Up to 3,500 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight (Up to 350 lbs. Tongue Weight)
• Class 3 – Up to 5,000 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight (Up to 500 lbs. Tongue Weight)
• Class 4 & Class 5 – Up to 12,000 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight (Up to 1,200 lbs. Tongue Weight)
• Fifth Wheel – Up to 24,000 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight
• Gooseneck – Up to 25,000 lbs. Gross Trailer Weight (Up to 6,250 lbs. Weight Capacity)

• Rear-Mount Trailer Hitch – Also called a bumper pull hitch, it is the most common type and is designed for use with removable ball mounts. Most bolt to the vehicle frame using existing holes and are custom built according to the vehicle manufacture and model year to help ensure a perfect fit.
• Fifth Wheel Hitch – Designed for heavy-duty towing with a pickup truck, it is installed inside the truck bed. Because it must remain in front of the rear axle, it is most commonly installed in long-bed trucks. You will need a Slider Fifth Wheel Hitch or a Sidewinder Hitch for short bed trucks so that the trailer won’t strike the cab on sharp turns.
• Gooseneck Hitch – Designed for heavy-duty towing with a pickup truck, often involving horse or construction trailers. Some of these hitches fold down or install under the truck bet to allow full bed use when not towing.
• Front-Mount Trailer Hitch – Typically used for carrying a spare tire, launching a boat, or for winches, bike racks, or snowplows. They usually bolt on using existing holes like rear trailer hitches and are custom built according to manufacturer and model year.
• Specialty Hitch – These are used for specific needs and include an Invisible Hitch, Fixed Tongue Hitch, Weld-on Hitch, and RV Bumper Mount Trailer Hitch.
